Navigating Typo3

Here you will learn how to navigate the Typo3 administration area. Please click on a subject to expand.

The Layout

The Typo3 admin layout simply works as follows: (see above)

  1. Menu
  2. Page Tree
  3. Editing Panel
  4. Search Field
  5. Workspace Selector

The Web Module in the Menu normally has the following modes:

  • Page
  • View
  • List
  • Functions

Please see below for a description of these modes.

Page Mode

Page Mode follows the usual three column layout (Menu | Page Tree | Editing Panel) but the editing panel is divided as follows: (see above)

  1. Page Editing Icons (Page/Edit Page/View Page)
  2. Content Areas
  3. Non-used Elements and Advanced Functions

Page Editing Icons: Page can be used to Show, Edit, Hide and Undo changes. Edit Page is used for changing Page Title, Subtitle, Abstract, Description, Media, Layout, Subpage Layout and there's also a content selector which allows one to select content from another page. View Page opens the frontend page in a new browser window.

Content Areas are defined by the Template Structure used on that page. The Template used on a page is either specifically defined for that page in Page Properties (see Edit Page) or as a sub-template of a page previous to it in the Page Tree.

Content is added to a content area by clicking the Create New Element icon (see A. above)

Non-used Elements are content elements that have been unlinked (unlinking happens when one clicks the dustbin next to an element - rather that deleting the item, the item is simply unlinked from the content area, it can still be selected for use on another page using the content selector in page properties). Click the Non-used Elements tab to delete unwanted elements.

The Advanced Functions tab is, very importantly, the place to go to clear the Front End (FE) cache when changes are made.

The FE Cache must be cleared for changes to take effect throughout a site.

View Mode

You can preview a page in View Mode without leaving the typo3 admin area.

List Mode

Use List mode to pull up a list of elements on a page. There are options to View, Edit, Move, Hide, Copy and Delete.

Functions Mode

Use the Functions mode to create multiple pages and sort existing subpages.

The Editing Panel Actions Bar (Important for saving changes)

The Editing Panel Actions Bar will appear whenever you have a document (e.g. a page or a content element) open for editing. Documents are normally opened through the Web > Page or Web > List modes. It consists of:

  1. Save document
  2. Save document and preview (opens the page in a new browser window)
  3. Save document and close
  4. Close document
  5. Delete
  6. Open documents drop-down (shows all currently open documents)
  7. Menu (save and close documents, clear cache)
